Tohoku is north of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto so you might get a better chance to catch some snowfall or perhaps a special winter experience in the Rotenburo Onsen (outdoor hot spring bath), with snow falling all around you.

However, do be prepared for temperatures that can go below zero and come warmly dressed.
