Which airlines to book -- and avoid -- out of the UK

A small airline servicing the Channel Islands, Aurigny Air Services, as well as Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines were the highest-ranked airlines in a consumer poll out of the UK.

Flying in or out of the UK? You might want to consult a new poll that reveals the best -- and worst airlines.

According to 12,000 passengers polled in a survey for Which?, an independent consumer group, Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines tied for top spot, scoring an approval rating of 87 percent in the category of long-haul carriers.

Criteria included in-flight entertainment, food and drink, punctuality, and value for money.

A small airline serving the Channel Islands, meanwhile, was named the best short-haul airline for its boarding process, spacious leg room, seat comfort, punctuality and cleanliness.

Aurigny Air Services is a small fleet of nine propeller planes that operate between the Channel Islands and London Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Bristol, East Midlands and Southampton.

Swiss International Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA also received high scores from respondents in the short-haul category.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, flyers may want to reconsider booking with airlines like Iberia and Ryanair, which landed at the bottom of the heap.

Spanish carrier Iberia received a paltry 28 percent customer rating, while Ryanair scored an approval rating of 32 percent.

Overall, the survey looked at 22 short-haul airlines and 24 long-haul carriers.

Full results will be available in the January 2014 issue of Which? Travel.
