China to sell train tickets on smartphones

The service will commence with a trial period scheduled for eight days starting from September 30, also a long holiday period encompassing Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese National Day, and will allow travelers in Shanghai to make reservations for train tickets on certain dates.

The ministry estimates that 75.4 million train trips will be made between September 27 and October 7 this year, averaging 6.86 million trips per day.

The new smartphone service is expected to ease demand at the existing online ticketing system, www.12306.cn. Earlier this year, Chinese users were angered when the online reservation website crashed as a result of overwhelming demand for train tickets in the run-up to the Lunar New Year celebrations.

The new ticketing service will be available on all smartphones operating on iOS or Android systems.
