Cape Town and New Zealand among favorite destinations for UK travelers

Telegraph readers selected their favorite travel destinations and companies for the year 2012.

Last year's winner Italy was chosen as best European country, followed by Iceland, which has seen a rise in popularity since the introduction of new flights between the country and the UK on low-cost airline easyJet. Norway is in third position kicking France out of the list for the very first time since the awards started 15 years ago.

New Zealand tops the list of the favorite worldwide country, followed by the Maldives and South Africa.

There was not much of a change in the favorite worldwide city category compared to last year's results. Cape Town, former runner-up, came in first place, followed by Vancouver and last year's winner New York.

Edinburgh, a runner-up last year, was chosen as the best UK city followed by York and Bath. London, host city of the Olympic Games and the winner at last year's awards didn't make it onto the list.

Over 17,000 readers voted online for their favorite travel companies in 16 categories, evaluating criteria such as service, value for money and efficiency.

Earlier this year the Guardian, another British daily, published its Readers' Travel Awards 2012 in 20 categories including best UK city, best European country and best UK hotel. Some of the winners were chosen by the readers, whereas some of the others were chosen directly by the Guardian's travel editors.

In the favorite UK city, Edinburgh featured in number one spot followed by Bath and York. Tokyo came in first position as the favorite overseas city within the Guardian's readers, followed by San Francisco and Spain's Seville.
