30th Just for Laffs Festival

Celebrating its 30th year, North America's first comedy festival is also the world's biggest with two million people attending the performances, conference and comedy film festival each summer. This year in honor of its anniversary, The Muppets present a gala, and top-notch stand-up comics such as SNL's Bill Hader and Lewis Black from Comedy Central's Daily Show fill the venues starting the 23rd. The Chicago JFL's event is in June, Toronto is scheduled for September 21-28, and Sydney's is in October.

27th Burning Man

This unique week-long annual event in the middle of the Black Rock Desert attracted more than 51,500 participants. An art festival, called ‘an experiment in temporary community, self-expression and radical self-reliance.' Large-scale visionary and outsider art works are set on fire at the site as well as the final ritual burning of a 40-foot wooden effigy, leaving the semicircle encampment without a trace. The art theme this year is Fertility 2.0. There are no vendors at the sold-out event.

33rd Detroit International Jazz Festival

37th Toronto International Film Festival

A premier North American cinema event, timed prior to awards season, the 10-day Toronto Festival has launched the best of international, Hollywood and Canadian cinema. The event is located at its new home in the Entertainment District, drawing a half-million attendees to screen 336 films from 65 countries, along with panel discussions and workshops. It joins Berlin, Cannes, Venice, and Shanghai as one of the top accredited film festivals in the world.

29th MTV Video Music Awards

Also called the VMAs, this show presents awards for the top music videos of the year. Categories include music genres from rock to hip-hop, male and female artists, bands and directors, plus a Vanguard award. Memorable appearances and outrageous performances are the hallmark of the event. The telecast will be live at 8 pm ET/PT from the Staples Center for the first time, which seats 20,000 attendees, the biggest venue yet for this show.
